Study of digits (second through fifth)

PA Projection
  1. Seat the patient at the end of the table;
  2. Lower limbs remote from the radiation;
  3. Upper limb resting on the table;
  4. Place the extended finger with the palmar surface down;
  5. Separate the digits slightly.

 Central ray perpendicular to the proximal interphalangeal joint.

Evaluation Criteria:
  • No rotation of the digit;
  • View the entire digit, including the metacarpophalangeal joint;
  • Digit centered and aligned with the center of collimation;
  • Not visualization the soft tissue of adjacent digits;
  • Appropriate exposure values (visualization of the all bony trabeculation and soft tissue).

Lateral Projection

  1. Seat the patient at the end of the table;
  2. Lower limbs remote from the radiation;
  3. Upper limb resting on the table and the digit in profile:
                               Third to fifth digit makes the internal profile;
                               Second digit makes the outer profile.

Central ray perpendicular to the proximal interphalangeal joint.

Evaluation Criteria:
  • Digit extended, aligned and centered with the center of collimation;
  • Entire digit in lateral position (condyles should be overlapped);
  • Visualization of the metacarpophalangeal joint;
  • Not visualization the soft tissue of adjacent digits;
  • Appropriate exposure values (visualization of the all bony trabeculation and soft tissue).
