Shoulder joint

Glenoid cavity

  1. Patient in supine or upright position;
  2. Rotate the patient 30-40º toward the affected side;
  3. Abduction of the arm and rest the palm of the hand on the abdomen.

Central ray angled at 15º minimum caudad to the coracoid process.
Respiration: Suspended.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Visualization of the joint space between humeral head an glenoid cavity;
  • Glenoid cavity in profile;
  • Sub-acromial space open (acromion and clavícul overlapped);
  • Espaço sub-acromial aberto pois o acrômio e a clavícul estão sobrepostos;
  • Appropriate exposure values (visualization of the all bony trabeculation and soft tissue).

AP Projection

  1. Patient in supine or upright position;
  2. Rotate slightly (15º) toward the affected side;
  3. Hand in:
  • External rotation;
  • Neutral rotation;
  • Internal rotation.
Central ray perpendicular to the coracoid process.

 External Rotation

Neutral Rotation

Internal Rotation

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Visualization of the superior scapula, lateral half of the clavicle and proximal humerus;
  • In external rotation:
    • Humeral head and greater tubercle in profile;
    • Outline of lesser tubercle between the humeral head and greater tubercle;
  • Neutral rotation:
    • Greater tubercle partially superimposing the humeral head;
  • Internal rotation:
    • Lesser tubercle in profile and medially;
    • Greater tubercle superimposed the humeral head.
  • Appropriate exposure values (visualization of the all bony trabeculation and soft tissue).
